I was born in Beijing, China, but I grew up in the town1 of Reading, England. I went to Reading School before moving to Cambridge in 2018 to study Mathematics at Trinity College, Cambridge. I completed my BA in Mathematics in 2021 and then stayed in Cambridge to complete a one-year Master’s course in Systems Biology. Since 2022, I’ve been based at Simon Fraser University (SFU) in Burnaby, which is a city in the Metro Vancouver region of the Canadian province of British Columbia. I’m doing a PhD in the Math Department, specialising in the math of quantum computation.

I am grateful to be living and studying on the unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples, including the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh), Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwitwetlem), Stó:lō, Qiqéyt (Qayqayt), Katzie, and Qw’ó:ltl’el (Kwantlen) nations.

Workers’ rights are incredibly important, and I’m honoured to be a Steward and active member of the Teaching Support Staff Union, which represents non-faculty teaching staff at SFU (e.g. TAs, Sessional Instructors, Graduate Facilitators) as well as Research Assistants.

My hobbies are climbing, playing video games and playing the piano. With possibly the exception of the last one, I am not very good at these… but they’re very fun. My friends have also gotten me into running. I’m still trying to decide if I like it or not.

Games2

My favourite game of all time is Undertale. The soundtrack is full of bangers — and you can play them in an orchestra!

I recently discovered the incredible Omori, which has a somewhat similar vibe to Undertale but is an amazingly compelling, rich and emotive game in its own right. It’s also much darker and more unsettling… but just like Undertale, I’m not afraid to admit that the ending made me ugly cry.

The goofiest game I’ve ever played is Goat Simulator.

I’m currently readdicted to Minecraft. Recently, I finished Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc upon my sister’s recommendation. It’s a very well-executed murder mystery visual novel type game, with an underrated soundtrack and extremely goofy 2D graphics.

  1. Despite having a population of almost 200,000. The UK is silly.

  2. Would you rather have unlimited bacon but no games, or games — unlimited games — but no more games?
